Montbeliarde has been selected in the mountains of eastern France since 1889, year of herd book foundation. After reaching all regions of France during the XXth century,the Montbeliarde breed increased its population to over 700.000 Montbeliarde cows milked in all France, of which 386.000 cows are under official milk recording. To provide the French cheese industry, Montbeliarde breeders and AI Studs always focused on yield with special emphasis on solids and mastitis resistance. In order to select for fertility and lifetime production, Montbeliarde Genetic Program has been orientated over the last 30 years to increase solids production and improve functional Type with special emphasis on udder qualities and feet & legs robustness, avoiding any extrem dairyness which led to maintain genetic body condition. This allowed the Montbeliarde breed to stay fertile and show a steady 382-day interval calving on average.
