Article 3: Crossbreeding success in California
Quote From Kevin Prins of Prins Dairy, Oakdale, California, USA.
"Breeding is going very well here ! We have now moved past our "experimental phase" and have heifers coming in fresh and what we believe to be the most successful combination ---Swedish Red from Montbeliarde/Holstein. Early on we bred these back to Holstein. As of now we are breeding them to Red Dane. I am placing the "New Holstein" (3 X crosses) in one computer group and the Red Dane (or 4 X cattle) in another. Over the next year or so I will be able to see if the return to Holstein has negatives. As of right now I can tell you that these three European breeds together ,with hybrid vigor, have the Holstein in the" hot seat". She has nothing special to offer except that big milk gene-----and as they say down under "they dooooon't paaay yeeou fo water" I am now a component breeder...... Yesterday we had 8.7 gal per cow with 4.0% fat and 3.5% pro".
